Brookline Travel Basketball is a competitive league for boys (grades 4 - 8) and girls (grades 4 - 8) living in / attending school in Brookline. Teams compete against other towns in the Metrowest Basketball League.
Tryouts for the 2024-2025 season will take place on Sunday September 22, 2024 and Sunday September 29, 2024. Players are strongly encouraged to attend both tryout sessions for their grade so that evaluators can collect as much information as possible. If your child has a conflict and will only attend one tryout session, their placement will be based on that session only with no make-up offered. Specific tryout times by grade are listed in the attached PDF.
Remember: this is a competitive league. If your child is new to basketball the in-town Joel Noe League is likely a more appropriate option.
Practices will start the in late October/early November and the typically 12-game regular season schedule will likely run from 12/08/2024 through 3/02/2025. Games are primarily on Sundays, followed by playoffs. Make-up games (often due to weather) and gym availability may cause games to be played on days other than Sunday.
At the discretion of individual team coaches, teams may also participate in pre-season and holiday tournaments and schedule non-league games in addition to the league schedule. These additional events are optional elements of the program.
Registration for the Travel league is administered by the Town of Brookline Recreation Department. (Click here for Rec Dept registration link.)
Travel League Tryout information:
-
Pre-registration is required so that we can anticipate the number of players at tryouts: click here for Rec Dept registration link. The program registration fee for 2024-25 is $185 (paid in advance). If a player is not placed on a Travel team, the registration fee will be refunded (it will be refunded in part if the player decides to play in the Joel Noe League).
-
Each grade will have two tryout sessions lasting 75 minutes each. Players are strongly encouraged to attend both tryout sessions for the evaluators to get the most complete look at a player's ability. We do understand that players may have athletic, personal, or family conflicts that enable a player to attend only one of the regular tryout sessions. Every player must attend at least one tryout to make a team. No make-up session will be offered for a player missing one of the tryout sessions.
-
Contrary to prior years, Girls tryouts will be held in Schluntz Gym. Boys tryouts will be held in Tappan Gym. Boys should check in at Tappan at least 20 minutes before their grade's start time. Girls should check in at Schluntz at least 20 minutes before their grade's start time.
-
The BBA compiles a group of evaluators at each grade that consists of neutral coaches from other grades as well as grade-level coaches. Each evaluator and coordinator has an equal voice in the placement of players, and all evaluators have a goal of achieving the suitable placement of players based on skill level.
-
The BBA will limit the number of teams at each grade level, so there may be cuts depending on the number of players who try out. Players who do not make a Travel team roster will automatically be eligible to play in the Joel Noe Recreation League if they choose.
-
Uniform samples will be available for trying on at check-in. Please arrive a little early to check-in if you need to try on a uniform. If your child played Travel in the past, have them try on their uniform before tryouts. If their uniform still fits, there is no need for a new uniform.
-
Parents will be asked to leave the gym during the tryout session.
-
Acceptance notification: Players will be notified of team selections as soon as practical after the tryouts.
-
Financial assistance with the registration fee may be available from the Rec Department. Financial assistance with uniform fees is available from the Brookline Basketball Association.
-
There is no fee to try out.
